Spain to roast in 40 degree temperatures: weekend weather forecast April 27-30
April in Spain is about to go down in history as the hottest ever recorded, with the thermometers set to hit the high 30s and even top 40ºC in places. The first heatwave of 2023 is well underway, and temperatures exceeded 36ºC in Valencia and 35ºC in Andalucía earlier in the week, but the warm spell has only just begun, as an anticyclonic ridge settles over the country, pushing up the mercury well into the beginning of May.

“The entry of a very hot and dry air mass, of North African origin, together with atmospheric stability conditions and strong insulation, is causing a rise in temperatures, which will continue in the coming days, reaching values typical of summer and exceptionally high for the dates,” the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has reported.

The hottest days by far will be Thursday and Friday in most of Spain, but particularly in the southwest; the thermometers will touch 40ºC in the Guadalquivir valley, and will exceed 30ºC in practically the entire country.

We will also suffer through a tropical night, which is much more typical of summer, when the temperatures are likely to dip below 20ºC “in points of Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura”.

Thursday April 27 will be mostly clear and sunny across the board, although the morning could begin a little overcast in the southern half of the Mediterranean coast. Very little change is expected on Friday April 28, with the exception of mountainous areas inland, where a weak and isolated shower or two is forecast.

As we head into the weekend proper, a cooler, more humid air mass will enter through northern Spain on Saturday April 29, pulling down the temperatures in most of the country bar the Mediterranean coast. However, it will continue to be unusually warm and in fact, Saturday will be the hottest day of the week in eastern Spain and the Balearic Islands.

Those living in southern and central Spain will wake up on Saturday morning after another tropical night and as the day progresses, highs of 36ºC will be registered in the likes of Murcia, Seville and Granada.

The temperatures will continue to fall on Sunday April 30, especially in eastern Spain and the Balearic Islands, but the tropical nights will persist in the south of Andalucía, while the daytime heat will continue in the Guadalquivir valley.

Even with the drop, the mercury will still top 30ºC in most of the south, but the north will be noticeably cooler, with A Coruña, San Sebastián, Vitoria and Pamplona reaching maximum temperatures of between 18 and 20ºC.

Aemet spokesperson Rubén del Campo expects this pleasant weather to last well into next week: “On Monday, May 1, temperatures could continue to drop, but it is likely that they will recover again as of Tuesday,” the expert explained.

Temperatures in general will be between 5 and 10ºC warmer than usual for the beginning of May with little rain on the horizon.
