Dr Srikanth E Neruganti, MBBS MS Ortho, Apollo Clinic, Marathahalli, highlighted the growing concern. “We have seen around 30 to 40% elderly patients visit us for bone health-related issues in the past few weeks. There is also a rise in cases of severe joint pain this winter due to post-viral fevers. Most of these patients report multiple joint pain lasting anywhere between six weeks to three months,” he said.
The colder weather impacts bone health in multiple ways. Limited exposure to sunlight reduces the body’s ability to produce vitamin D, essential for strong bones.
Additionally, lower temperatures can exacerbate conditions like arthritis, making joints more painful and less mobile. Muscle tightening due to cold weather also affects bone strength and stability, increasing the risk of stiffness and falls.
To combat these issues, Dr Neruganti suggests a range of measures. “Improving bone health during winter involves vitamin D supplementation, regular low-impact exercise, and fall prevention strategies. A

Post-viral arthritis is characterised by pain and swelling in joints like the wrists, ankles, and knees, often so severe that it restricts movement. “Based on recent observations, the likelihood of viral arthritis is significant. We are seeing approximately two to three patients daily with symptoms of viral arthritis,” Dr Das noted.

He cautioned against assuming all joint pain after a fever is due to viral arthritis. “Proper diagnosis by a doctor is necessary to determine if the cause is solely viral arthritis or if there are other underlying factors.”
Experts recommend early medical intervention for any persistent joint pain to ensure appropriate treatment. With the right precautions, such as maintaining an active lifestyle, following a balanced diet, and consulting doctors for timely care, elderly individuals can reduce the impact of bone and joint issues during winter.
